  • Chaz Singh became the city’s first Sikh councillor when he was elected to represent Drake ward in 2011.
  • Singh’s wife Saranjit Kaur took up the role of Deputy Lady Mayoress.
  • Singh, who was born and raised in Birmingham, moved to Plymouth in 2002 to run a business and in the last decade, has been actively involved in promoting the city and working in the community. He is a member of FATA HE, an organisation which was established to redress the social and economical inequalities faced by Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in Plymouth.
  • For over 5 years, he worked for as a Funding and Training Officer for Fata the BME Development – an umbrella organisation for black and minority ethnic individuals and groups.
  • This work bought him into contact with key decision makers both in Plymouth, Devon and the wider region.
  • He now works independently as an advisor in specific communities of interest in the south west region.
  • Most people know him as Chaz or “that fella in the turban who pops up everywhere” and he plays an active role in Devon life. 
  • He had worked hard to gain the trust of people from many different political persuasions and, in doing so, have strong cross-party support. 
  • He is also a local Councillor for Plymouth Drake ward and is proud of being available to constituents to assist with a wide range of issues.
  • Chaz Singh is very much fond of Colourful Turbans. He also run the concept – Turban Outfitter
  • This ranges from working closely with Plymouth University to resolve some of the tensions between students and local residents to reinstating benefit payments for an increasing number of people who have had them mistakenly withdrawn.
